My first time at the Club was
in March 2008 at the Square Chapel, Halifax. I am no expert - the Club's
stated aim is to be open to players of all ages and abilities. As a pretty
basic player, I found it a daunting and challenging experiece. The only
person I knew was Valerie, the Secretary. Lawrence Killian took the
session, and he certainly knew what he wanted, but in a positive and
encouraging way, which was so very important for a nervous new-comer. What
stuck me was that he, and others used my first name quickly. I was aided
in technical issues by those around me, mainly Bob Shaw, whom I'd never
met before. And what a good player he was too!
The music played varied from
comtemporary to Handel, ending with Rhinegold in 17 minutes, or
thereabouts!
Good players are so very important
in terms of how they receive less-able players. Hard words, tutting at
technical weaknesses, etc are more-than-enough to put off less confident
players, who would never return and, perhaps, feel they are wasting their
time on the horn. Friendly words, smiles and helpful comments are the real
sign of a club worth staying with. Playing with fine players encourages
those less adept, inspiring them to want to improve. I had never played
with a professional horn player before, but sitting next to Paul Kampen in
the Wagner was wonderful for me. The chance to mix with players you see on
the professional stage, whose playing you so much admire as beyond your
capabilities, is a thrill, and the Opera North Horn Club is that chance. I
recommend any other horn player, even quite scratchy ones like me, to give
the club a go.

Hello!
I am a new member of the Horn Club and I am absolutely
impressed and fascinated about it. I have met fantastic people of all ages
and abilities but all of them passionate about (french) horn (so as I am).
I enjoy very much playing together, having chat and plenty of nice time
spent together as well as having rehearsals on very professional level and
concerts.
Big variety of pieces gives an opportunity to taste all genre of music in
horn ensemble arrangements.
Being a member is really great fun and good occasion to develop your
own playing skills while playing with so passionate and brilliant players.
Best regards
